  • Legislative Requirements: If there is any legislation governing what you must have for your business. Under the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation you are required to have all gaming machines under constant supervision of CCTV. This also may determine camera placement,  the resolution of cameras you must have and storage requirements.
  • Technology Type / Protocol Requirements: This relates to the type of CCTV technology you need, and the cabling topology required for your business. For example, if you have legacy coaxial cabling from analogue cameras having been installed previously, you can have HDCVI cameras installed allowing up to 4K video transmission over coax. This way you save the cost of having to re-cable your premises. If you have an existing network or even no network, we recommend you install IP cameras as they give you more flexibility if you need to expand your system down track and the picture quality is better than their HDCVI counterparts.

Many businesses have a need to monitor personnel access. Restaurants, hotels, pubs and gaming venues and businesses dealing with cash or valuable merchandise are common users of access control systems.

The actual set-up of the system will depend on the needs of the business, but there are some standard requirements. One common features of a typical access control system is the generation of user activity reports

When considering Access Control for your restaurant, hotel, pub or gaming venue, you need to consider the following:

  • How many areas to which you need to restrict access. Some businesses may only have access control installed on 1 door, some cover all main entry points. Common areas to cover in the Hospitality industry are cash rooms, managers office, store rooms or cellars where large volumes of liquor are stored. We would also advise you to install access control on any rear door or any entry point that may leave you are your staff vulnerable from outside attacks either during or outside business hours.
  • How many doors are in these areas: remember the more doors you do, the more it will cost.
  • Time Periods and user permission groups: Here we determine who is allowed to access certain areas where and when. For example, management might have access to all areas all days. Administration and accounts have access to the office only 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and warehouse staff 7am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday but can access the warehouse only.
  • Reader & Card Type: Do you require swipe cards, proximity fobs biometric readers or keypads?
    1. Swipe cards are larger than a fob and are a similar size to a business card. One of the major benefits of swipe cards is that they are large enough to print on either for branding purposes or Personnel ID. You can purchase a card printer to do this if these are your requirements.
    2. If a swipe card doesn’t suit your needs, fobs are quite popular due to their compact size. They can be hung off a keychain and are typically no larger than a 20cent piece.
    3. If you have a large amount of staff Biometric Readers can be quite cost effective. Typically, they are much more expensive than the average swipe card or proximity reader. Where you save money is in the fobs. If you have 200 staff, all the fobs could cost between $2-$3K. Another benefit of Biometric Readers is you don’t have to deal with managing staff losing them as all you do is learn in the users’ fingerprint, typically the index finger.
    4. Another option is keypad access control, whereby you just use a pin number to open the door. At Eversafe we don’t recommend this technology as it can leave your system vulnerable to others as a PIN can be texted to another person. Also, with a lot of the cheaper keypad access control systems, the actual controller is built into the keypad. This makes it vulnerable in that the lock output and lock mechanism are here. All you have to do is take the keypad off the wall short out the lock output which in turn may release the lock or electric strike.
  • Software: When considering an access control system for your childcare centre you also need to consider how you are going to program users and access reports. Some systems have software installed on a PC or Server which is charged on a license per user basis. The advantages of this type of product is the complex functionality and benefits it can provide you.
    1. One of the products we install at Eversafe is Integriti Pro. Integriti is an Australian made Access Control system which allows you to sync Integriti users with Windows Active Directory Users. In other words any changes made by your network administrator in the Windows Active Directory will be pushed down into the Integriti database. This effectively means that User Information is only entered into one system saving time and improving data consistency. Integriti can also be integrated with some Time and Attendance systems as well. We generally recommend Integriti for our corporate clients and larger organisations because of its high level integration with Building Management Systems, scalability and cost.
    2. Some access control systems have a web based interface which in most cases doesn’t require any licensing and is designed to be much more user friendly. The product we generally recommend at Eversafe for the hospitality industry is Inception. Inception is an Australian made web based access control system and is extremely user friendly. It allows you to program users onsite through your web browser or even remotely (via Skytunnel). You can download user reports in either HTML or PDF formats. And you can even control doors from anywhere around the world. Inception won product of the year in 2017.

A commercial grade intrusion detection system will help protect your assets and your property. Security alarm devices are standard for many businesses. If your budget is tight, at Eversafe we recommend you have an alarm system as a minimum requirement for your business. Think of it this way, an alarm system tells an intruder to get out and CCTV captures the evidence. If you have CCTV on its own, then the intruder can stay inside for as long as they like, until they find your recording device and steal it. There goes your evidence! Be proactive not reactive. Too many people install alarm systems after the fact, when it’s too late. Don’t become another statistic call, install an alarm system.

When considering an alarm system for a business that operates in the Hospitality industry like a restaurant, hotel, pub or gaming venue, you need to consider the following:

  • How you need to control the system: Security alarms are generally easy to control these days. To activate the system, you will be required to type in your security code on a keypad or touchscreen, which is usually a combination of numbers. Some systems can also be connected to the internet allowing them to be controlled via a smartphone app which is quite handy if someone forgets to arm system at closing time, it saves having to drive back to work at 3am in the morning. Most systems can have remote controls these days, although for business use we don’t recommend them due to the fact if you lose one it’s like giving someone keys to your business or workplace.
  • Communication Type: These days there are many ways an alarm system can communicate alarm events to you. Traditionally alarm systems have used Dialler Monitoring over PSTN (Landlines) to communicate to a security control room or call your smartphone device. This is slowly being phased out as NBN (National Broadband Network) is being rolled out around Australia.
    1. In most cases at Eversafe we are future proofing our customers by switching them over to GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). GPRS is a packet oriented mobile data service which uses the 3 or 4G mobile network. This is the highest level of security communication that we have due to the fact that the GPRS units are dual sim ie. If the Telstra network fails it will automatically use the Optus network. The GPRS unit also sends a polling signal to the control room (like a heartbeat) at predetermined intervals. If the control room fails to receive the polling signal, then the control room will contact you to alert you to the poll failure. Because the GPRS unit uses the Mobile network there is no phone cable to tamper with making your system even more secure.
    2. IP Monitoring: IP Monitoring is similar to GPRS except that it uses the internet to send signals to the control room. It is not as secure for the following reasons,
      • Must ensure you have your modem connected to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply like a backup battery) this is to prevent communication failure in the event of a power failure.
      • Also an intruder can cut the cable to your internet causing a comms failure. With both GPRS & IP Monitoring you won’t have the call costs associated with Dialler Monitoring which helps offset the extra cost of GPRS or IP Monitoring.
    3. Push Notifications: Some systems will send you a Push notification. A push notification is a message that can be received by your mobile device even if the phone is locked or the App that it is associated with it is not open. Some alarm systems can send you messages if a zone has been breached or if someone has armed or disarmed your system. Each mobile platform supports push notifications. Push notifications only make a “Ding” sound once received which may not be loud enough for you to hear even in the dead of night.
    4. Email notifications are another form of communication that we only recommend in certain circumstances. Although we don’t recommend them as your main communication format unless you really have to. But email notifications can be handy if you need to know whether your system has been armed or disarmed and by whom. We have seen cases where some of customers have used this in the case of their cleaners accessing the premises with a valid user code. The cleaner has only been onsite for 30 minutes and has charged our customer for a 3hour clean. Our customer knew this because the cleaner’s code was setup to send an email once they had disarmed the alarm and then the system sent another code once they re-armed the system.
  • Zones & Device Types: When installing an alarm system, you need to consider what areas you need to cover and what devices you will require to cover each zone.
    1. Motion detectors (or trade name PIRs) will generally cover areas of up to 10-11mts. This what we recommend in most cases because they are cost effective and cover large areas.
    2. Reed Switches are a magnetic contact used for doors windows or even roller doors. In other words, they are mainly used on the perimeter of a building. They are in 2 pieces 1 part being the reed itself and the other being the magnet. When separated they cause the circuit to open which in turn triggers the alarm system. The 2 main advantages of this type of device are firstly if installed on the perimeter, it will allow you to protect these areas even if you are inside. Secondly by having reed switches on a door or window will trigger the alarm before an intruder even makes it inside.
    3. Other devices you may need to consider are hold up or panic buttons for areas where cash is handled or where you are dealing with the public. In the event you are threatened, you can push a button which is under the desk or counter alerting the control room to your situation, resulting in an immediate Police response.
    4. Seismic sensors are used if you have a safe. They trigger the alarm when they detect heavy vibrations from a drill or jackhammer.
    5. You should also think about smoke detectors too. Conventional smoke detectors can’t connect to an alarm system. Smoke detectors are able to trigger the alarm in the event of a fire alerting the control room to call the fire brigade. Some businesses must have proper Fire Panels because of the Australia Building Code. This is maybe due to the type of premises you may have.
  • Integration Options: If you require both an alarm system and access control system then you may choose to install Integriti or Inception as they are both integrated products. This gives you better control over your system in that you are able to program users for both systems all at once. You will able to generate reports for both systems simultaneously as well saving you time and money.
