Ways to Keep You and Your Family Safe in Extreme Weather

In April this year, the Climate Commission stated  that “climate change has driven an increase in the occurrence and intensity of extreme weather events such as floods, bushfires, droughts, and hot days,”. In addition the Climate Commission’s Extreme Weather report revealed that the Southeast region of the country is “particularly vulnerable.” This statement triggered calls from the creators of the report for emergency services, governments, businesses, and private individuals to start preparing for the impending increase in unusual weather disturbances. Ask yourself are you ready for changes to weather conditions? Have you plans on how best to cope? If you do not currently have a plan in place, now is the best time to so implement one, especially given that we are in the midst of winter – a season known for extraordinary climatic events. Emergency Kits Prepare a set of supplies that will come in handy when in the midst of extreme weather disturbances. This emergency kit should contain essentials such as a flashlight and batteries, water, hand-cranked or battery-powered radio, and non-perishable food such as canned milk, juice, soup, fruits, meats, vegetables, peanut butter, granola bars, crackers, trail mix, sweets, cereals, coffee, tea, sugar, pepper, and salt. Include medical supplies such as aspirin, repellent, disposable masks, antiseptic solution, and bandages. Make sure you place this kit in a dry and secure location that you and your family are both aware of. It should not be exposed to moisture or direct heat.
