Preventing House Fires: Don’t Let Some One Take Your Precious Home

The Daily Telegraph reported of two separate house fires which occurred on Tuesday 9th July 2013. Both blazes were in suburban areas of Melbourne. In one of the reported incidents, a man, aged 60, was killed. According to the news, the man was staying at his neighbour’s inner-west residence because “his other two homes had burned down as a result of his habit of smoking in bed.” This third house was that of his next-door neighbour’s – a middle aged lady who made her home available to him while he was looking for a new place to live. Unfortunately, her residence was destroyed by the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation by the authorities. Shane Sutton, CFA operations officer, said that the man managed to escape from the Sibley Court bungalow. However, he returned to the burning house to save his hostess’ dog and was killed. The dog was later found unharmed. The middle aged woman was able to flee the property by climbing through a bedroom window, although unfortunately was unable to save anything from her home. The second incident occurred in Prahran. Fortunately, no one was killed. The survivors, 2 young men, woke to find their ceiling had collapsed. Despite this, they were able to escape without sustaining significant injuries. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes. The cause of the blaze is still being investigated. MFB chief fire officer, Shane Wright, said: “Every life lost is tragic and I urge all Victorians to take preventive action to prevent fires occurring in their homes in the first incidence and by knowing...

How to Avoid Carbon Monoxide Leaks in Your Home

TAGS: , , ,
The CNN has branded CO “winter’s silent killer” as virtually all households use more gas for longer periods during the cold season and are thus more exposed to the risk of inhaling and being poisoned by carbon monoxide. This is not to discourage homeowners like you from using your gas pipelines to heat your residence. It’s to warn you to be vigilant about certain risks that may affect your health significantly. Take the case of Tyler and Chase Robinson, 6 and 8 years old respectively. In May 2010, the boys from Shepparton woke in the middle of the night and went to their mother’s room to sleep at her side. When Vanessa Robinson, the boys’ mother, woke up the next afternoon, she noticed something odd about her sons. Aside from that, she felt severe pain in her arm. When the paramedics came, they found that the boys had passed away. Their autopsy report revealed that the cause of their death was carbon monoxide poisoning. It was also discovered that a faulty wall heater was the source of the leak. Mrs. Robinson herself is left with a numb arm, a consequence of nerve damage brought about by CO poisoning. Mrs. Robinson and her sons were living in a rented flat. Recently, her landlord admitted that the heater in the rented property “has not been serviced for more than 4 years.” The carbon monoxide is dangerous because, according to Dr. Howard Frumkin of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “it binds with the red blood cells in our bodies and prevents them from carrying oxygen.” This can then lead to...

Making Sure Your Home is Safe While Away on Holiday

Here’s an exemplary story reported by the CNN that centers on the importance of home security systems and CCTV cameras: An Australian man, who lived in a suburban neighbourhood in Melbourne, kept a check on his three security surveillance cameras through his iPad while on vacation in faraway Mauritius. One day, after logging into the system via his tablet PC, he saw 2 burglars breaking into his house and taking valuable items from his residence. They even attempted to steal the alcoholic beverages he had in stock. The man acted swiftly. He made a long distance call to the Victorian police and alerted them to the burglary taking place at his home. The authorities were able to respond quickly and arrest the intruders while they were still at the holidaying homeowner’s residence. Criminal charges have been filed and both burglars have appeared in court. This story demonstrates how you can keep your home safe even when you’re away on holiday. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, modern technology has made it possible for you to keep an eye on your residential property even while thousands of miles away from your domestic haven. Aside from installing CCTV cameras that can be accessed online via iPad or iPhone and checking your surveillance systems at regular intervals, you should ensure that all openings in your house are closed and locked. See to it that the curtains are drawn and window covered. In addition, you should not hide spare keys anywhere within your property. Instead leave them with a trusted relative or friend who lives nearby. This will ensure that...
