Stop False Alarms

Stop False Alarms SecurityDid you know that false alarms are often easily avoided?

Reducing the incidence of a false alarm can be simple and means you may avoid an unwanted interruption to your holiday.
Consider these hints:

1. If a friend is looking after your home while you’re on holidays make sure they have a code for disarming and are on your call out list with the monitoring centre.

2. Insects – no matter how clean our homes are, sometimes insects can get into or walk across a sensor and activate the alarm. Spray around the sensor with surface spray.

3. Pets – remember to isolate an area of your home if your pets are kept inside and you do not have Pet Tolerant Detectors. If you do have Pet Tolerant Detectors do not put furniture close to the detector. If your pet gets too close to the detector they can activate the alarm. If you have a new pet and need to upgrade your detectors, just call one of our consultants on 1800 009 995.

4. Open windows – with the warmer months upon us, we may want to leave some windows open. Be aware that rapid changes in temperature and drafts can lead to false alarms.

Also, if you move a motion sensor or remove its cover or open your control panel, it will cause a tamper alarm. If this happens, ensure you call our monitoring station on 1800 009 995 to advise.

And, as a further preventative measure, we recommend an Annual Maintenance check on your alarm. One of our experienced technicians will review the alarm’s operation, check sensor locations and review environmental factors which could lead to false alarms.

Top Home Security Tips

At Eversafe Security we are always looking for new ways (and sometimes ‘old but good’ forgotten ways) to keep your home and assets safe and protected. See our top tips below for ones that you might have missed out on.

  1. Mark your prized possessions with a special pen available in a property marking kit which you can purchase, or borrow from the local police station.  You can use any method of marking that is personal to you i.e. postcode or the house number followed by the first couple of letters of your house name.  Whatever is recognizable as you and your property is all it needs.

  1. Burglars almost always check outside your property for hidden spare keys.   If you are concerned about locking yourself out of your home or car maybe leave your keys with a trusted neighbor. It may sound simple, but never leave a key sitting in a lock.

  1. Never leave cash lying around that can be seen through windows etc, would be thieves would find this very attractive.

  1. Don’t leave laptops, game stations and other easily removable technology devices in plain view. Where possible put these items in locked drawers or at a minimum away from plain sight.

  1. Install window locks to all easily accessible windows except your emergency escape windows.  One in five burglars will gain entry through a window. Locks are relatively simple to install yourself, or for more advanced solutions contact and Eversafe security Consultant.

  1. The doors and doorframe on your property should be of the strongest and safest construction possible. Insert extra security locks on patio doors so that they cannot be lifted from their tracks.  Any double doors should be fitted with lockable bolts at both the top and the bottom and you should ensure you always remove the keys from these locks.

  1. Protect your privacy by ensuring your electrical appliances such as TVs videos computers etc are not able to be seen through your windows. This is particularly important while you’re away, consider closing the blinds in front of these windows and even placing a timer switch on devices like the TV and Radio when you are away so it “sounds” like someone is at home, but potential intruders can’t see in to be sure!

  1. When going on vacation do not make it obvious to intruders.  At night when the house is in darkness and the curtains are open is a sure sign no one is home.    Remember to cancel all newspaper deliveries and have a friend or neighbour empty the mailbox daily for you.  Leaving a spare key with a trusted friend means they can check the on property regularly.

  1. Write a list with the details of all your valuables.  Include in this any serial numbers and the make and models numbers of appliances. Taking a photo of your valuables is also a good idea as a precaution, and to help with any insurance claims

  1. Change your locks without delay if you lose your keys.

  1. Having a security door you can see through which you keep locked is a very good security measure. If this is not possible install a door chain and be very cautious about opening the door to strangers.  Always ask to see proof of identity from callers and if you are still hesitant phone the persons head office for assurance.

  1. Storing all jewelry and valuables in a small safe is an extra safety precaution.

  1. If you install a burglar alarm system yourself you must make sure it is compliant with Australian safety standards and is approved by your insurance company.  Be sure to set the alarm to turn off after 20 minutes or so if it activates when you are not around. For obvious reasons we advise against this, is most cases alarms that have not been professionally installed have proven to be faulty, or have failed to meet insurance requirements upon further inspection. Contact an Eversafe Security Consultant if you are unsure or need advice.

  1. Install good outside lighting as a deterrent but be sure it does not disturb your neighbours.

  1. Don’t leave your car keys lying around where they could be used to steal your car, never leave them near doors or windows.

  1. Consider joining your local neighborhood watch scheme or if there isn’t one operating,  maybe start one up in your community.

New Approaches to Home and Business Security

Turn on the TV or flip open the newspaper and you will find numerous stories of break ins and robberies in homes and businesses, no wonder many people now turn to installing video alarm  and monitoring systems to help prevent this crime. At Eversafe we can supply and install everything from a mini spy wireless camera to a full night vision security set up.

As a home owner you may be “blessed with” less than trustworthy neighbours who feel the need to snoop into your property. Having camera surveillance and an alarm system set up will deter nosy neighbours; and if you are a business owner, the same applies to your business venture. Would be thieves much prefer to break into somewhere that does not have an active security system visibly in place.

Home and Business security is about more than simple security devices. For your security system to be most effective you need to have a security “plan” in place. For example, if an intruder is going to break into your premises you want to do more than just deter and detect them. You want to scare them off before they take anything valuable, and you also want to alert the people around you, and your security company that something untoward is taking place.

That being the case, to simultaneously protect your home or business you want visible warning for intruders to let them know they are being watched, video surveillance to record the incident, an alarm to fend off the intruder and warn surrounding witnesses, and security monitoring to alert the authorities your assets are in jeopardy.

When interviews were conducted on criminals convicted for burglary offences it was noted that attempting a break in on a property that had security systems in place was very low compared to the properties that were unprotected. The lesson here is, do not make it easy for thieves to break into your property!  Having a security system connected to a 24 hour support line that transmits to police etc is one of the biggest deterrents in crime prevention today.

To tie your security system “plan” together why not consider remote viewing technology? With today’s advancements in security technology you can log in from anywhere in the world and keep a watchful eye on your property. If you have an iPhone, iPad or other smart phone device it can be as simple as the touch of a button. Eversafe Security offer a wide range of remote access control systems designed to suit both homes and businesses with varying needs and budgets.

So as you can see, with more than just intention, and a good plan in place, your home and business can be 100% protected, all the time, no matter where you are.

To find out more about your security options you need to speak to an experienced security consultant. Visit Eversafe online today to contact a security consultant directly.
